The Banana - Carbohydrates, Sugar And Calories

The banana has no fats in it. All of the calories come from its carbohydrates and sugar.

The wonderful thing about it is that it is good carbohydrates and good sugar. Why is it good? Basically, it is natural as opposed to refined.

All refined foods have a higher glycemic index than foods found in their natural state. For example, unpolished rice or partially polished rice has a lower glycemic index than polished rice. Foods with a lower glycemic index will not spike your sugar level whereas one with a higher index will, and that's something we should try to avoid.

A banana or two can give us a boost in our energy level. We'll need this when we are on the go or when we are physically active and engaged in exercises or sports. And the banana is such a convenient food to bring along. What's more it's filling and will drive hungry pangs away.

For those who are concerned about their calorie intake, choose bananas that are a day or two away from fully ripening. They contain less sugar. As bananas ripen, more carbohydrates are converted into sugar which is absorbed faster into your bloodstream. Carbohydrates take a longer time to digest and hence enter the blood at a slower rate. However, don't take bananas that are too raw either. You don't enjoy it. It's just not palatable, really.

The calories in a banana also depends on the size of the banana. The length of a banana may range from 4 to 9 inches or more. , depending on the variety. Refer to the table below.
